What happens during a tooth extraction?

On the day of your extraction at Milani Dentistry, your dentist administers a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and soft and hard tissues around it. After the anesthesia sets in, your dentist carefully removes your affected tooth using an elevator and forceps.

For impacted teeth (teeth that haven’t yet erupted), your dentist makes a small incision along your gums. Next, your dentist carefully removes the bone surrounding your tooth and sections the tooth in pieces. Finally, the tooth parts will be removed.

What is recovery like following an extraction?

After the tooth extraction, it only takes a few days to recover. In the first 24-48 hours after your extraction, you might experience a bit of swelling, bleeding, and general discomfort. It is very important to follow your surgeon’s instructions which will be given to you both in written and verbally.  Take your medication as prescribed to achieve faster healing. To ease swelling, you can also apply an ice bag to your cheek for 20 minutes several times on the first day. You should also avoid smoking, spitting or rinsing your mouth for at least 24 hours.

Don’t let a tooth pain prevent you from eating and smiling confidently. If you suspect you need an extraction or immediate dental care near Woodbridge, Vaughan, give us a call at (905) 856 9966 today.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

The last teeth to erupt are wisdom teeth. The eruption usually happens around age 17 and by age 21 they are completely erupted. There are some cases however, that the wisdom tooth can not erupt and remains impacted. In general, wisdom teeth that are impacted cause food to be stuck resulting in gum inflammation (Pericoronitis). If impacted food is left alone the adjacent teeth could develop cavities as well.

It has been shown that in some cases, wisdom teeth that are un-erupted push the adjacent teeth to make room for themselves. This could cause damage to the tooth next to the wisdom tooth. Also, the overcrowding creates malocclusion and teeth become misaligned. This matter can create food traps between the rest of the teeth as it becomes harder to clean in between with floss and brushing becomes more difficult. Over time, gums will become inflamed with more bleeding and bad breath can occur. The accumulation of bacteria will create an unfriendly environment for the gums and bone with could be detrimental to the health of those tissues. Trismus (limitation in mouth opening) and swelling are other problems seen with impacted wisdom teeth. We at Milani dental office near Woodbridge, Vaughan provide surgical services for those who need their wisdom teeth removed.
